Mobile amplía su alcance de reciclaje y abre un nuevo centro de reciclaje
MOBILE, Ala. — Dado que muchos miembros de la comunidad ya utilizan dos centros de reciclaje de flujo único, la ciudad de Mobile se complace en abrir un tercer centro de reciclaje en el Dauphin Island Parkway.
Financiado por una subvención del Departamento de Gestión Ambiental de Alabama (ADEM), el “Centro de Reciclaje Parkway en la Península” abrió oficialmente al público el lunes 15 de abril.
El centro de reciclaje más nuevo es una de las varias formas en que la ciudad de Mobile ampliará sus ofertas y objetivos de reciclaje en 2024. La ciudad también dedicará personal adicional a sus iniciativas de reciclaje, aumentará la educación pública y la divulgación sobre los servicios de reciclaje disponibles, y revisará caminos para incluir empresas locales en los programas de reciclaje de la ciudad.

Los residentes pueden hacer su parte llevando a los lugares de entrega únicamente materiales que la ciudad de Mobile pueda reciclar. Estos artículos incluyen latas de aluminio y acero, cartones para alimentos y bebidas, productos de papel (incluidos periódicos y cartón aplanado) y botellas y contenedores de plástico vacíos. Para limitar la contaminación, enjuague los recipientes de alimentos y bebidas antes de dejarlos.
Algunos artículos que no se pueden reciclar incluyen bolsas de plástico, toallas de papel, cajas de pizza, equipos eléctricos, baterías, ropa y vidrio. Estos artículos a menudo se mezclan con el reciclaje porque la gente espera que puedan reciclarse. Si bien tiene buenas intenciones, este tipo de “ciclo de deseos” puede causar problemas graves y contaminar elementos que de otro modo podrían reciclarse productivamente.
Mobile expanding recycling outreach, opens new recycling center
MOBILE, Ala. — With two single-stream recycling centers already being used by many community members, the City of Mobile is excited to open a third recycling center on Dauphin Island Parkway.
Funded by a grant from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), the “Parkway Recycling Center on the Peninsula” officially opened to the public on Monday, April 15.
The newest recycling center is one of several ways the City of Mobile will expand its recycling offerings and goals in 2024. The city will also dedicate additional staff to its recycling initiatives, increase public education and outreach about available recycling services, and review paths to include local businesses in the city’s recycling programs.
These efforts are being funded through a separate grant from The Recycling Partnership, a national non-governmental organization dedicated to building a better recycling system, with support from the American Beverage Association’s “Every Bottle Back” initiative and the Alabama Beverage Association. The Recycling Partnership selected the City of Mobile because of its dedication to advancing recycling across the community.
“Over the last several years, we’ve taken steps to streamline recycling for Mobilians and continued to explore ways to expand the recycling options in our community,” Mayor Sandy Stimpson said. “We are excited to be working with The Recycling Partnership, which will help us continue that momentum and better educate our citizens on what, where, and how they can recycle in the City of Mobile. We also wouldn’t be this far along without the ADEM’s Alabama Recycling Fund committing the resources needed to build this third drop-off center.”
Residents can do their part by only bringing materials the City of Mobile is able to recycle to the drop-off locations. These items include aluminum and steel cans, food and beverage cartons, paper products (including newspapers and flattened cardboard), and empty plastic bottles and containers. To limit contamination, please rinse any food and drink containers before dropping them off.
Some items that cannot be recycled include plastic bags, paper towels, pizza boxes, electrical equipment, batteries, clothing and glass. These items often get mixed into recycling because people hope that they can be recycled. While well-intentioned, this kind of “wish-cycling” can cause serious issues and contaminate items that could otherwise be productively recycled.
