“Vamos a hacérselo llegar, solo necesitan conectarlo”.

Overall, the 331 South Sewer Project will be completed in multiple phases, and is expected to cost approximately $20 million. Monday’s groundbreaking was just the first step of the overall project. Initial funding is provided by the city of Freeport, Walton County and the state of Florida. Additional funding will be needed to complete the project. Once complete, more than 1,000 residents will have access to the new sewer system.

“Our number one goal for this project is to get septic systems off of the bay,” Freeport City Manager Charlie Simmons said. “We’re going to get it to them, they just need to hook it up.”

Along with preserving the health of the Choctawhatchee Bay, the ability to connect to a sewer system is expected to create extra incentives for businesses and new homes to come to the area.

“It’s going to open the south end of Freeport up to commercial opportunities and it will also add infrastructure to some of the smaller neighborhoods,” said District 1 Walton County Commissioner Boots McCormick. “This is one of the most important projects that the county has been involved with in a long time.”

Florida Senator George Gainer, who helped secure $1 million in funding through the state of Florida, said that the project will be sure to benefit future generations.

“When you see a well-planned project come together and you’re looking at it up and down the road, your children and grandchildren and everybody else will be saying ‘thank you for the foresight that you displayed at this time,’” Gainer said.
