Mary Gutiérrez selected to promote climate justice in Gulf South
Oakland, Calif. – Pensacola climate activist Mary Gutierrez has been selected to join a new Fighter League pilot program designed to promote climate justice in the Gulf South.
The Fighter League, a grant award and year-long mentorship program for women of color funded by The Solutions Project and the Movement Strategy Center, will initially award $60,000 in grants to support six recipients who lead climate-justice efforts in the Gulf South states.
“Communities of color in the South, especially women leaders, are banding together to fight climate change; build local, homegrown solutions; and promote a clean energy future,” said Solutions Project Director of Investments Rudi Navarra. “The will is there. The know-how and the talent are there. The only thing standing in the way is a shortage of resources. The Fighter League pilot program is designed to change that,” Navarra said.
In addition to serving as executive director of Earth Ethics, Inc., Mary Gutierrez is co-founder with Jayeesha Dutta of Another Gulf is Possible, a women-of-color-led collaborative using the arts, cultural organizing, direct action, and policy advocacy to create vibrant communities, sustainable ecosystems, and just economies from the Gulf South to the Global South. One of her colleagues at Another Gulf is Possible, Jayeesha Dutta, was also selected to participate in the Fighter League program.
Gutierrez and the other Fighter League members will participate in leadership development training, with a particular focus on skills that will advance their collaboratives’ work in a way that’s consistent with feminine leadership principles. Actor Mark Ruffalo co-founded The Solutions Project, and he and actor Don Cheadle serve on the organization’s board together.
