While peak months for hurricane activity are from August to October, deadly hurricanes can occur at any time during the season and tropical cyclones can form at any time of the year.

For this reason, La Costa Latina newspaper is publishing a Spanish language disaster guide filled with tips on how to prepare families, homes, pets and property. With the support of local sponsors, the publication will be available in print and distributed at events and locations where the newspaper is distributed. The publication will also be available online.

Aside from hurricanes, the disaster guide addresses various possible safety threats such as tornadoes, floods, wildfires, extreme heat and cold weather, pandemics and more. Tips include ways to reduce risk of damage and injury, what to expect during and how to safely recover after an occurrence.

In the event of an emergency activation, La Costa Latina staff and volunteers also provide news updates about the emergency online on their website, Facebook page and on SightLine. When a major emergency such as a hurricane occurs, La Costa Latina also broadcasts periodic updates in Spanish at WUWF, 88.1FM.

“One of the most commonly asked questions people ask when a hurricane is approaching is whether to evacuate and where,” said Grace Resendez McCaffery, owner of La Costa Latina. “That is a question that should be decided before a storm forms.”

Other questions regarding school closings, bridge closings, shelter locations and regulations and how to report power outages. All of these questions are addressed in the disaster guide and should be researched before a disaster strikes.
