La Sociedad Elcano de Pensacola recibirá al Buque Escuela de la Armada Española Juan Sebastián de Elcano del 29 de mayo al 3 de junio
La Ciudad de Pensacola y la Sociedad Elcano se enorgullecen de anunciar el regreso del velero de instrucción de la Armada Española, Juan Sebastián de Elcano. El barco atracará en el puerto de Pensacola en el Commendencia Street Slip del 29 de mayo al 3 de junio. Esta visita coincidirá con las festividades de Fiesta Pensacola e incluirá recorridos públicos gratuitos en barco.
Philip “Lipo” Davis, el Cónsul Honorario de España en Pensacola, que sucedió en el cargo a su madre, Dame Maria Davis, encabezará el regreso del Elcano a Pensacola. El mundialmente famoso JS de Elcano ha visitado repetidamente la ciudad de Pensacola desde el 1959 para celebrar la rica historia española de nuestra ciudad. “Es un placer dar la bienvenida de nuevo al Elcano en su novena visita a Pensacola,” dijo Lipo Davis.
Comandada por el capitán Manuel García Ruiz, el Elcano es una goleta de cuatro palos de vela superior y es uno de los veleros más antiguos que navegan en la actualidad. Construido en el 1927, el Elcano lleva el nombre del explorador español que completó la primera circunnavegación de la tierra de Fernando de Magallanes entre el 1519 y el 1522. Con 370 pies de largo, es el tercer velero más grande del mundo. El casco es de hierro y hay cuatro palos llamados Blanca, Almansa, Asturias y Nautilus, llamados así por otros buques escuela de la Armada que precedieron al Elcano. Hasta la fecha, el Elcano ha completado cerca de 100 cruceros de entrenamiento, incluidas diez circunnavegaciones completas del mundo.
Como buque escuela, el Elcano tiene como misión principal cultivar la marinería entre los futuros oficiales de la Armada Española: Los Guardiamarinas. El objetivo del crucero de formación a bordo del Elcano es potenciar y ampliar la educación y formación náutica de los Guardiamarinas. La presencia del Elcano en puertos extranjeros contribuye a la política exterior de España y desarrolla las cualidades de liderazgo de los Guardiamarinas tanto en el mar como en tierra.
En su función de apoyo a los Servicios Marítimos, “Todo el Consejo de la Liga Naval de Pensacola tiene el honor de dar la bienvenida a Pensacola al Capitán Manuel García Ruiz, Comandante del Juan Sebastián de Elcano, a sus oficiales y tripulación,” Presidente de la Liga Naval de Pensacola Mark Curley dijo. “También nos gustaría agradecer a todos los patrocinadores y los esfuerzos del ex presidente de la Liga Naval de Pensacola, Dan McCort, por su ayuda en la coordinación de la visita. Muchos eventos emocionantes están planeados para los oficiales y la tripulación del Elcano. Elcano Society of Pensacola to Welcome the Spanish Navy Training Ship Juan Sebastian de Elcano May 29 -June 3
The City of Pensacola and the Elcano Society proudly announce the return of the Spanish Navy training tall ship, Juan Sebastian de Elcano. The ship will dock at the Port of Pensacola at Commendencia Street Slip from May 29 – June 3. This visit will coincide with Fiesta Pensacola festivities to include free public ship tours.
Philip “Lipo” Davis, the Honorary Consul from Spain in Pensacola having succeeded the position from his Mother Dame Maria Davis will spearhead the return of the Elcano to Pensacola. The World-Famous JS de Elcano has been repeatedly visiting Pensacola since 1959 to celebrate our city’s rich Spanish history. “It is our pleasure to welcome the Elcano back for her nineth visit to Pensacola,” Lipo Davis said.
Commanded by Captain Manuel García Ruiz, the Elcano is a four-masted top sail schooner and is one of the oldest tall ships sailing today. Built in 1927, the Elcano was named after the Spanish explorer who completed Ferdinand Magellan’s first-ever circumnavigation of the earth from 1519 to 1522. At 370 feet long, she is the third-largest tall ship in the world. The hull is made of iron, and there are four masts called Blanca, Almansa, Asturias and Nautilus — named after other Navy training ships that preceded the Elcano. To date the Elcano has completed nearly 100 training cruises, including ten full circumnavigations of the globe.
As a training ship, the Elcano’s main mission is to cultivate seamanship among the future officers of the Spanish Navy: The Midshipmen. The purpose of the training cruise on board the Elcano is to enhance and broaden Midshipmen education and nautical training. Elcano’s presence in foreign ports contributes to Spain’s foreign policy and develops Midshipmen leadership qualities both at sea and on land.
In its role of supporting the Sea Services, “The entire Council of the Pensacola Navy League is honored to welcome Captain Manuel García Ruiz, Commanding Officer of the Juan Sebastian de Elcano, his officers and crew back to Pensacola,” President of the Pensacola Navy League Mark Curley said. “We would also like to thank all the sponsors and the efforts of Pensacola Navy League Past President Dan McCort for his assistance in coordinating the visit. Many exciting events are planned for the Elcano Officers and Crew. The goal is for the Crew to engage with and learn more about our city, as we learn more about our city’s Spanish influence.”

The entrance for the public tours is located at the southern end of Commendencia Street on the western side of the Port of Pensacola. Public access is not allowed from the Port of Pensacola’s main gate on Barracks Street.
