PENSACOLA, Fla–La semana pasada, el presidente estadounidense anunció que planeaba reducir el programa DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, por sus siglas en inglés ). Este programa permitió a los inmigrantes que fueron traídos a los Estados Unidos como niños no autorizados a permanecer en el país con estatus legal. Miembros de la comunidad se reunieron en el centro de Pensacola para expresar su desacuerdo con los planes del presidente para apoyar a los receptores de DACA. Tres de estos receptores asistieron al mitin para contar sus historias y explicar su necesidad individual de proteger su estatus. “La gente está muy mal informada. Pasamos por una extensa revisión de antecedentes penales y no se nos permite votar,” dijo la ex receptora de DACA, Claudia Olmedo, a la multitud de seguidores. “Tenemos números de seguridad social y pagamos impuestos. No tenemos un paseo gratis.” Olmedo se convirtió en receptora de DACA en el 2012. This program allowed immigrants who were brought to the United States unauthorized as children to stay in the country with legal status. Members of the community gathered in Downtown Pensacola to voice their disagreement with the president’s plans for and to show support for DACA recipients. Three such recipients attended the rally to tell their stories and to explain their individual need to protect their status. “People are very misinformed. We go through an extensive criminal background check and we are not allowed to vote,” said former DACA recipient, Claudia Olmedo, to the crowd of supporters. “We get social security numbers and pay taxes. We get no free ride.” Olmedo became a DACA recipient in 2012 Earlier this week, democrats met with the president to negotiate an agreement in hopes to spare the program. While democratic representatives announced that an agreement was reached, the president tweeted to the contrary the next day.
