Comunidad recuerda a sacerdote
PENSACOLA, Fla. – Los católicos de la comunidad latina de Pensacola están de luto por la pérdida del Rev. P. Richard Lawrence Altenbaugh, de 82 años, fallecido el 29 de mayo del 2017 después de celebrar su 57 aniversario. Altenbaugh era conocido como un “sacerdote de la gente” muy feliz, que empezó las misas en español en St. John la Evangelist Catholic Church hace más de 15 años.
Altenbaugh fue ordenado por el Obispo Toolen, en Mobile, Alabama, el 26 de mayo de 1960. Además de Pensacola, sirvió en muchas parroquias incluyendo Birmingham, Ala, Marianna, Quincy, Chipley, Bonifay, Fla y San Angelo, Tex.
En el 2005, Altenbaugh se retiró como Pastor de St. John’s, pero siguió ayudando y poniéndose a disposición para el ministerio sacerdotal en toda la Diócesis.
El Rev. P. Altenbaugh era uno de nueve niños nacidos el 12 de noviembre de 1934 en Detroit, Michigan. Era un piloto experimentado y un golfista ávido.

Community remembers priest
PENSACOLA, Fla. – Catholics in the Latino community in Pensacola are mourning the loss of Rev. Fr. Richard Lawrence Altenbaugh, 82, who passed away on May 29, 2017 after celebrating his 57th anniversary. Altenbaugh was known as a very happy, “people priest” who started the Spanish language Masses at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church more than 15 years ago.
Altenbaugh was ordained by Bishop Toolen, in Mobile, Ala. on May 26, 1960. In addition to Pensacola, he served in many parishes including Birmingham, Ala., Marianna, Quincy, Chipley, Bonifay, Fla. and San Angelo, Tex.
In 2005, Altenbaugh retired as Pastor of St. John’s but continued to assist and make himself available for priestly ministry throughout the Diocese.
Rev. Fr. Altenbaugh was one of nine children born on Nov. 12, 1934 in Detroit, Mich. He was an experienced pilot and an avid golfer.
Viewing: Monday, June 5th, from 5 – 7 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 303 S. Navy Blvd, Pensacola. Vigil Prayer Service at 5 p.m. Monday.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 6th, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Msgr. James Flaherty officiating with Fr. Eugene Casserly serving as homilist. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery off 12th Avenue.
