La acusación del Departamento de Justicia contra el SPLC amplía el ataque de la Administración a los derechos civiles
WASHINGTON, DC – La semana pasada, el Departamento de Justicia anunció que ha imputado al Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) por cargos de fraude y lavado de dinero, debido a su labor de exponer a grupos de odio neonazis y extremistas. En respuesta, Mike Calhoun, presidente del Center for Responsible Lending (CRL), emitió la siguiente declaración:
“La imputación del Southern Poverty Law Center por su heroica y eficaz labor para contrarrestar a peligrosos grupos de odio, como el KKK, constituye un nuevo episodio de la campaña sostenida de la Administración contra las protecciones de los derechos civiles —que son un pilar fundamental de nuestro país— y contra las organizaciones que defienden estas libertades esenciales.
Este es otro de los reiterados intentos de la Administración por revertir protecciones clave en materia de derechos civiles, utilizando las instituciones federales para obstaculizar la aplicación de dichos derechos e intentar intimidar a grupos defensores de los mismos, como el Southern Poverty Law Center.
El Center for Responsible Lending conoce bien esta campaña. Hemos sido testigos del desmantelamiento sistemático de la Oficina de Protección Financiera del Consumidor (CFPB) —una agencia creada tras la crisis financiera de 2008 para proteger a los ciudadanos estadounidenses de prácticas discriminatorias y depredadoras—, comenzando por su Oficina de Préstamos Justos. La División de Derechos Civiles del Departamento de Justicia está siendo reorientada en contra de las mismas comunidades que fue creada para proteger y, ahora, ataca a las organizaciones que defienden y hacen cumplir los derechos civiles.
Una tras otra, las agencias encargadas de proteger a los estadounidenses de la discriminación han sido vaciadas de contenido o vueltas en contra de sus propias misiones. El actual ataque contra el Southern Poverty Law Center —cuya labor de inteligencia sobre grupos de odio ha nutrido durante décadas las investigaciones del FBI sobre terrorismo interno, y cuyas oficinas fueron atacadas con bombas incendiarias precisamente a causa de esa labor— encaja perfectamente dentro de este patrón. El CRL se solidariza con el Southern Poverty Law Center, hoy y en los días venideros.”
DOJ Indictment of SPLC Extends Administration’s Attack on Civil Rights
WASHINGTON, DC – Last week, the Department of Justice announced it indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) on fraud and money laundering charges for its work to expose neo-Nazi and extremist hate groups. In response, Mike Calhoun, president of the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) issued the following statement:
“The indictment of the Southern Poverty Law Center for its heroic and effective work to counteract dangerous hate groups like the KKK is another part of the Administration’s sustained campaign against the civil rights protections that are a foundation of our country and the organizations that defend these essential freedoms.
This is another of the repeated efforts by the Administration to reverse key civil rights protections and use federal institutions to prevent civil rights enforcement and attempt to intimidate civil rights groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The Center for Responsible Lending knows this campaign. We have seen the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau — an agency created in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis to protect Americans from discriminatory and predatory practices — be systematically dismantled, starting with its Office of Fair Lending. The Department of Justice Civil Rights Division is being redirected against the communities it was built to protect and now attacks organizations defending and enforcing civil rights.
Agency after agency charged with defending Americans from discrimination has been hollowed out or turned against their own missions. The current attack on the Southern Poverty Law Center, whose intelligence on hate groups informed FBI investigations into domestic terrorism for decades and whose offices were firebombed because of that work, fits squarely within this pattern. CRL stands with the Southern Poverty Law Center today and in the days ahead.”
