Letrero de Bienvenida de Pensacola Ilumina Bayfront Parkway
La ciudad de Pensacola finalizó la instalación del nuevo letrero de bienvenida en Bayfront Parkway con una ceremonia oficial de iluminación el 9 de abril.
La ceremonia rindió homenaje a Briana Spence, de Spence Studios, cuyo diseño fue seleccionado entre 22 propuestas durante el Concurso de Letreros de Bienvenida de Pensacola de 2023. Las bases del concurso pedían a los artistas que consideraran la estética del lugar, las limitaciones físicas, la historia de Pensacola y la cohesión al crear su diseño.
“Es un poco surrealista verlo pasar de la pantalla de mi computadora, donde estoy acostumbrada a ver la mayor parte de mi trabajo, a algo tan grande, cobrar vida,” dijo Spence al pequeño público que se reunió para ver el letrero iluminado por primera vez. “Pensacola tiene una gran comunidad artística, y el simple hecho de poder trabajar en algo para mi ciudad… esta ciudad tiene un lugar muy especial en mi corazón, y ha sido una gran experiencia.” El diseño de Spence fue seleccionado mediante un proceso de selección a ciegas y puntuación por un comité de selección compuesto por seis personas que desconocían la identidad de los diseñadores hasta después de la puntuación y la elección del ganador.
El Concurso de Letreros de Bienvenida de Pensacola estuvo abierto al público del 28 de marzo al 26 de abril de 2023. Durante ese periodo, también se celebró una sesión de preguntas y respuestas del 3 al 7 de abril para que los artistas interesados formularan preguntas, incluyendo una reunión de interés celebrada el 13 de abril en el Ayuntamiento.
Spence comentó que su inspiración para el diseño provino no solo de los numerosos pelícanos que habitan Pensacola, sino también de las icónicas estatuas de pelícanos de fibra de vidrio que se pueden ver por toda Pensacola. También incorporó luces al diseño como un guiño al icónico letrero iluminado de Pensacola Beach, tan apreciado y reconocido por muchos.
“El diseño de Briana realmente destacó entre las demás propuestas del concurso, así que estoy emocionado de verlo finalmente iluminar el cielo nocturno,” declaró el alcalde de Pensacola, D.C. Reeves. “Este letrero perdurará como uno de esos símbolos legendarios de nuestra ciudad para las generaciones venideras.”
La ciudad colaboró con Dalrymple-Sallis Architecture para este proyecto, financiado en parte a través de un acuerdo de participación conjunta con el Departamento de Transporte de Florida.
El letrero de bienvenida se encuentra entre Bayfront Parkway y Gregory Street, con orientación sur-sureste, y se espera que reciba a unos 100.000 visitantes diarios en Pensacola.
Pensacola Welcome Sign Illuminates Bayfront Parkway
The City of Pensacola completed the installation of the new welcome sign at Bayfront Parkway, with an official lighting ceremony on April 9.
The ceremony honored Briana Spence of Spence Studios, whose design was chosen from 22 submissions during the Pensacola Welcome Sign Contest in 2023. The contest guidelines asked artists to consider the location’s aesthetics, physical limitations, Pensacola history and cohesiveness when creating their design.
“It’s kind of surreal seeing it go from my computer screen, where I’m used to seeing most of my work to something this large, come to life,” Spence told the small audience that gathered to watch the sign illuminated for the first time. “Pensacola has such a great artistic community, and just being able to work on something for my town — this town has such a special place in my heart, and this has been a great experience.”
Spence’s design was selected through a blind selection and scoring process by a selection committee consisting of six individuals who did not know the identity of the designers until after the designs were scored and a winner was selected.
The Pensacola Welcome Sign Contest was open to the public from March 28, 2023 to April 26, 2023. During that time, a Q&A period was also held from April 3-7 for interested artists to ask questions, including an interest meeting held April 13 at City Hall.
Spence said her inspiration for the design came not only from the many pelicans that inhabit Pensacola but also from the iconic fiberglass pelican statues that can be spotted throughout Pensacola. She also incorporated lights into the design as a nod to the iconic light-up Pensacola Beach sign, which is loved and recognized by many.
“Briana’s design truly stood out among the other contest submissions, so I’m excited to finally see it light up the night sky,” Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said. “This sign will live as one of those legendary symbols of our city for generations to come.”
The city worked in partnership with Dalrymple-Sallis Architecture for this project, with funding provided in part through a joint participation agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation.
The welcome sign is located between Bayfront Parkway and Gregory Street, facing south-southeast, and is expected to greet as many as 100,000 visitors to Pensacola daily.
