The latest: Florida Power & Light Company’s (FPL) has been using sheep to help maintain vegetation at one of its solar sites in Santa Rosa County for a year now – and the pilot is starting to show benefits for customers.
Cost efficiencies: FPL is testing whether a flock of sheep can supplement traditional mowing to help maintain vegetation at one of its solar sites. The company says it is seeing some initial cost efficiencies from the program – savings that would ultimately be passed along to customers.
- The flock has nearly doubled over the past year, with approximately 100 sheep and lambs on-site maintaining the vegetation, alongside traditional mowing.
Benefits of solar: Solar energy is the most cost-effective source of new power generation FPL can invest in, providing reliable energy for customers while keeping bills as low as possible.
- Since 2009, FPL’s investments in solar energy have saved customers approximately $900 million in avoided fuel costs, with more than $500 million in savings in the past two years.
Supporting the community: FPL also welcomed the Santa Rosa County 4-H group to the site to learn more about solar energy and what it takes to raise a flock of sheep at a solar site. FPL presented Santa Rosa County 4-H with a $5,000 donation, and the 4-H members received community service hours towards their individual annual goals.
