Pero hay quienes en nuestra comunidad hacen mucho más, hombres y mujeres sobresalientes cuyas vidas y carreras son un testimonio de perseverancia y dedicación al bien común. Durante las próximas semanas, La Costa Latina presentará una serie de entrevistas con miembros destacados de nuestra comunidad, comenzando con algunas mujeres que personifican el ideal del empoderamiento femenino. La Costa Latina has been serving the Latino community for more than 15 years, tirelessly bringing you the news stories from the local and national front. We pride ourselves on bridging the cultural divide and building relationships within our community.
But there are those in our community who do so much more, outstanding men and women whose lives and careers stand as testaments to perseverance and a dedication to the greater good. We’d like to share some their stories with you. And if you know anyone you think should be featured, let us know! Who else is doing great things? Let’s hear about it!
For the next few weeks, La Costa Latina will be featuring a number of interviews with outstanding members of our community, starting with a few women who epitomize the ideal of female empowerment. They have generously agreed to share their stories earnestly and with full transparency. We hope you will enjoy them.

Entiendo que usted es de herencia mexicana. ¿Nació aquí o emigró? ¿Siempre ha vivido en nuestra área? Sí, soy de herencia mexicana. Nací en los Estados Unidos al igual que mis padres. Nací en Aurora, Colorado. Mis abuelos paternos emigraron aquí desde Chihuahua y Sonora, México, en momentos separados, sin conocerse y casarse hasta que estuvieron en los Estados Unidos.
He vivido en el noroeste de la Florida durante bastante tiempo, pero he tenido la suerte de haber vivido en otros lugares también en los EE. UU. El noroeste de la Florida no será mi lugar de descanso final.
I understand you are of Mexican heritage. Were you born here, or did you immigrate? Have you always lived in our area? Yes, I am of Mexican heritage. I was born in the United States as were my parents. I was born in Aurora, Colorado. My paternal grandparents migrated here from Chihuahua and Sonora Mexico at separate times not meeting and marrying until they were in the United States.
I have lived in Northwest Florida for quite some time but have been fortunate to have lived in several other places In the U.S. as well. Northwest Florida will not be my final resting place.
Entiendo que es ecologista. ¿Puede contarme un poco sobre el trabajo que hace? ¿Trabaja con una organización? ¿Tiene una especialización? Ha habido bastante transición para mí profesionalmente (y personalmente) a lo largo de los años. Comencé haciendo trabajo de laboratorio, tomando muestras y analizando muestras de agua, aire y suelo. Luego pasé a trabajar en el campo realizando evaluaciones biológicas, luego a la planificación ambiental evitando y minimizando el impacto al medio ambiente a través de cómo construimos, y ahora principalmente el trabajo de educación y políticas. Actualmente tenemos varias campañas en las que trabajamos en plásticos, cambio climático, justicia ambiental y social, justicia del agua, exploración y perforación de petróleo y gas, fracturación hidráulica y algunas más.
Fundé Earth Ethics a 501(c)3 en 2008 y Earth Action a 501(c)4 en 2013. Actualmente trabajo con estas organizaciones. I understand you are an ecologist. Can you tell me a bit about the work you do? Do you work with an organization? Do you have a specialization? There’s been quite a bit of transition for me professionally (and personally) over the years. I started out doing lab work, sampling and analyzing water, air, and soil samples. then I moved on to working in the field conducting biological assessments, then to environmental planning avoiding and minimizing impact to the environment through how we build, and now primarily education and policy work. We currently have several campaigns we work on plastics, climate change, environmental and social justice, water justice, oil and gas exploration and drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and a few more.
I founded Earth Ethics a 501 c3 in 2008 and Earth Action a 501 c 4 in 2013. I currently work with these organizations. We don’t currently work in one specific area or have a specialization as we know that everything is connected. However, majority of work has dealt with water justice issues.
¿Qué le atrajo a esta profesión? Al crecer, pasamos mucho tiempo al aire libre y de vacaciones en parques estatales y nacionales. Nos enseñaron a respetar y cuidar la tierra. Esto fue reforzado por mis abuelos maternos que eran agricultores familiares. Nos enseñaron a usar solo lo que necesitábamos y cuidar la tierra y otras especies. Mi amor y respeto por la naturaleza y mi deseo de protegerla y conservarla me llevaron a esta profesión.
What drew you to this profession? Growing up we spent a lot of our time outdoors and vacationing at state and national parks. We were taught to respect and take care of the earth. This was further reinforced by my maternal grandparents who were family farmers. They taught us to use only what we needed and care for the land and other species. My love and respect for nature and my desire to protect and conserve it drew me to this profession.
¿Cómo empezó en esta línea de trabajo? Tuve la suerte de tener excelentes mentoras, ambas mujeres. Mientras trabajaba en mi licenciatura pude obtener una pasantía en un laboratorio local donde analicé muestras de agua, aire y suelo. Después de terminar mi licenciatura, conseguí un trabajo en el departamento de protección ambiental de la Florida como especialista ambiental y luego en el consejo de planificación regional del oeste de la Florida como planificadora ambiental. Estoy agradecida por todas estas oportunidades, especialmente la tutoría de la Dra. Maria Csouros y la Dra. Dolly Hwang, pero nunca sentí que estaba haciendo lo suficiente para proteger el medio ambiente.
How did you get started in this line of work? I was fortunate enough to have great mentors, both women. While working on my undergraduate degree I was able to secure an internship at a local lab where I analyzed water, air, and soil samples. After finishing my bachelors, I got a job at the Florida department of environmental protection as an environmental specialist and then later at the west Florida regional planning council as an environmental planner. I am grateful for all these opportunities, especially the mentorship of Dr. Maria Csouros and Dr. Dolly Hwang, but I never felt I was doing enough to protect the environment.
¿Qué desafíos enfrenta en su trabajo? Algunos de los mayores desafíos que he enfrentado y que aún enfrento son la discriminación de género y racial. La mayoría de esta discriminación proviene de hombres blancos, pero algunos incluso han estado en manos de mujeres blancas. Además, esta área sufre mucho de nepotismo y del buen sistema “ole boy.” Y si usted es una mujer fuerte e independiente y especialmente una PDC (Persona De Color) que dice lo que piensa o no hace las cosas como siempre se ha hecho, está fregada.
What challenges do you face in your work? Some the greatest challenges I have faced and still face, is gender and racial discrimination. Majority of this discrimination has stemmed from white males, but some has even been at the hands of white females. Also, this area suffers a lot from nepotism and the good ole boy system. And if you are a strong, independent female and especially a POC who speaks your mind or does not go with doing things the way they have always been done, you are screwed.
¿Su herencia influyó en su profesión elegida? ¿Presentó o su género presenta desafíos adicionales? Creo que mi herencia ha influido en mi profesión de alguna manera; El amor a la tierra, la pasión por protegerla, saber que somos parte de la naturaleza son factores que influyen. Sin embargo, a veces creo que está en mi ADN. No puedo hacer nada más. Simplemente no estoy hecha para eso. Como PDC y mujer, he afrontado muchos incidentes en los que los hombres blancos han esperado que ofrezca mi tiempo y mi capacidad de forma gratuita cuando sé que eso nunca se esperaría de mi homólogo blanco.
Did your heritage influence your chosen profession? Did/does it or your gender present any added challenges? I think my heritage has influenced my profession in some ways; the love of the land, the passion to protect it, knowing we are part of nature are all influencing factors. However, sometimes I just think it is in my DNA. I cannot do anything else; I am just not built for it.
As a POC and woman I have experienced a lot of incidents where white males have expected me to volunteer my time and ability for free when I know that would never be expected of my white male counterpart.
¿Siente que su herencia le da una perspectiva diferente, ya sea profesional o personalmente? Como indígena y “latinx”, mi perspectiva es radicalmente diferente, profesional y personalmente, de muchos otros en este campo, especialmente en esta área. Hablamos un idioma completamente diferente y no estoy hablando literalmente, sino que nuestra mentalidad está en los extremos opuestos del espectro, lo que tiene mucho que ver con la cultura y la sociedad. Nuestras comunidades son las que históricamente (y todavía están siendo) afectadas negativamente por la mala planificación, el racismo sistémico y la contaminación ambiental. Como mencioné anteriormente, me criaron para respetar la tierra porque estamos intrínsecamente atados a la tierra y parte de la tierra.
Do you feel your heritage lends you a different perspective either professionally or personally? As an Indigenous and Latinx, my perspective is radically different, professionally and personally, from a lot of others in this field, especially in this area. We speak a completely different language and I am not talking just literally, but our mindset is on opposite ends of the spectrum, which I has a lot to do with culture and society. Our communities are the ones that have historically (and are still being) adversely impacted by poor planning, systemic racism, and environmental pollution. As I mentioned previously, I was raised to respect the land because we are intrinsically tied to the land and part of the land.
¿Cuáles son sus proyectos u objetivos futuros? Profesionalmente, planeamos continuar nuestro trabajo en la justicia del agua, la transición de los combustibles fósiles, los esfuerzos de educación ambiental, la justicia climática y la justicia ambiental, así como nuestro programa de embajadores juveniles y nuestra campaña plástica.
Personalmente, planeo retirarme a mi tierra con mi pequeña casa y mi gran jardín donde escribiré, ministraré a la tierra y viajaré.
What are your future projects or goals? Professionally, we plan to continue our work on water justice, transitioning off fossil fuels, environmental education efforts, climate justice and environmental justice as well as our youth ambassador program and plastic campaign.
Personally, I plan to retire to my land with my small house and large garden where I will write, minister to the earth and travel.
