Las decoraciones de Halloween del Sheriff del Condado de Mobile incluyen al ICE
Las fotos de la casa del Sheriff del Condado de Mobile, Paul Burch, aparecieron en redes sociales y se viralizaron, con críticos que cuestionaron que las decoraciones de Halloween se asemejaran a una operación de inmigración y del ICE. La esposa de Burch se atribuye el mérito de la temática de la decoración.
“Me gusta decorar para Halloween y otras festividades, y rotar estas decoraciones periódicamente,” dijo Michelle Burch. “Mi esposo no tiene nada que ver con esto, salvo cortar el césped alrededor.”
“Hice esta, aprovechando tanto mi ascendencia cubana como los nuevos y necesarios cambios en la aplicación de la ley federal de inmigración,” declaró. Mis padres eran inmigrantes legales y tengo muchos inmigrantes en mi familia.
Grace Resendez McCaffery, defensora de los derechos de los hispanos y propietaria de Latino Media Gulf Coast, fue a Mobile para ver las decoraciones.
“Es extremadamente decepcionante y triste,” dijo McCaffery.
“Es cuestionable si estos mensajes indican o perpetúan el miedo, lo que, por supuesto, conduce al racismo,” añadió McCaffery. “Ya sea que lo haga otro inmigrante o una persona hispana, sigue siendo perjudicial.”
La Asociación Empresarial Hispanoamericana de la Costa del Golfo también emitió un comunicado sobre la controversia:

Mobile County Sheriff’s Halloween decorations include ICE
The photos of Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch’s home appeared on social media posts and went viral with critics questioning the Halloween decorations resembling an immigration and ICE operation. Burch’s wife takes credit for the decoration theme.
“I like decorating for Halloween and other holidays and rotate these decorations periodically,” Michelle Burch said. “My husband has nothing to do with these, other than mowing the grass around them.”
“I made this one, playing both on my Cuban background and new, needed changes in federal immigration enforcement,” her statement said. “My parents were legal immigrants, and I have plenty of immigrants throughout my family.
Hispanic advocate and owner of Latino Media Gulf Coast, Grace Resendez McCaffery drove to Mobile to see the decorations herself.
“It’s extremely disappointing and sad,” McCaffery said.
“It’s questionable whether these are messages that indicate or perpetuate fear, which of course leads to racism,” McCaffery said. “Whether it’s done by another immigrant or Hispanic person, it’s still harmful.”
The Hispanic American Business Association of the Gulf Coast also shared a statement addressing the controversy:
“The Latin community in Mobile, Alabama, is a vibrant community that contributes to the overall success of the city and the region. The focus of the Hispanic American Business Association of the Gulf Coast remains on the mission of our organization and the meaningful impact we continue to make in our city.
