La casa segura para el tráfico humano ‘The Secret Place’ se abrirá en Panhandle

PENSACOLA, Fla.—La trata de personas no siempre es la operación elaborada y sofisticada que mucha gente cree que es. En realidad, puede ser una explotación tan simple como intercambiar dinero, un lugar seguro para dormir por la noche o una comida para actos sexuales. Y en el noroeste de la Florida, esa es la situación en la que las autoridades encuentran víctimas jóvenes.
Muchas de esas mujeres jóvenes, específicamente entre las edades de 12 y 17 años, experimentaron un trauma que distorsiona sus puntos de vista sobre la normalidad, y la recuperación presenta un desafío costoso y gravoso para el estado.
Dos entidades, Liberty Church y FamiliesFirst Network of Lakeview, están trabajando juntos para construir una casa segura para que las víctimas reciban asesoramiento individualizado, servicios específicos y, con suerte, una familia para ir a casa al otro lado.
The Secret Place está programado para abrir en la primavera en 10 acres en un lugar no revelado en el First Judicial Circuit. Al principio, habrá espacio para albergar a cinco niñas, pero los organizadores esperan expandir el sitio más adelante.
“Necesitan normalidad, necesitan un lugar donde realmente puedan tener un entorno seguro donde la confianza pueda construirse nuevamente”, dijo Kristin Lipscomb, pastor de Liberty Church “Con todo lo que han pasado, su dignidad ha sido robada, su autoestima ha sido robada, su confianza para las personas ha sido robada, entonces entrar y brindar esos servicios es increíble, pero no si no tienen una caja fuerte, ambiente para que sean niños, y merescan ser niños.”
Lipscomb dijo que las dos agencias asociadas han trabajado juntas durante más de un año para dar vida al proyecto, y que la casa ya está construida. Pero después de examinar más a fondo las necesidades de los niños que The Secret Place brindará, dieron un paso atrás para remodelar y realinear el diseño de la instalación.
Por ejemplo, planean agregar un baño privado a cada habitación para que las niñas sepan que tienen un lugar para llamar suyo.
“Las niñas que van a ser atendidas en esta casa han sido explotadas de todas las maneras posibles, y tener espacio privado sabiendo que podrían desvestirse, usar el baño, tomar una ducha sin que alguien las viole es enorme,” dijo Jenn Petion, administradora director de FamiliesFirst Network of Lakeview. “Cada joven en el hogar tendrá su propia habitación, su propio baño y parámetros muy estrictos sobre quién puede ingresar a su habitación porque para ellos necesita recuperar ese sentido de privacidad y esa sensación de límites y tener cierto control.”
Petion dijo que en todo el estado hay pocas casas seguras que permitan el tipo de servicios de recuperación intensos que The Secret Place brindará, y los que sí lo hacen están en el sur de la Florida, lo que requiere enviar a las víctimas del Panhandle lejos del área que conocen.
Además de eso, esos servicios son caros, con un costo aproximado de $400 por víctima por día en los casos más extremos.
Liberty creó una organización sin fines de lucro separada de la iglesia para donaciones de campo y garantizar la supervisión de la junta para el proyecto. Una vez que la casa esté en funcionamiento, FamiliesFirst reembolsará a la organización los servicios que brinda a las víctimas que reciben atención allí, según Petion.
La casa tendrá licencia para llevar a cinco personas, así que si The Secret Place se expande como planea, habrá más casas construidas en el terreno de 10 acres que harán casi una pequeña comunidad.
Lipscomb dijo que espera en tener una de las pocas casas de seguridad en el Panhandle permita una discusión comunitaria más franca sobre cómo abordar los problemas.
“Tenemos que estar bien al hablar de eso, y también estar bien con el reajuste de nuestro lenguaje y nuestra percepción sobre cómo es (el tráfico de personas)”, dijo Lipscomb. “Todo, desde hablar sobre lo que sucede con la pornografía, qué pasa con la industria del sexo, cómo esto afecta a nuestros hijos, qué está pasando con nuestras redes sociales, todo esto tiene que ser parte de la conversación.”

Human trafficking safe house ‘The Secret Place’ to open in Panhandle

PENSACOLA, Fla.—Human trafficking isn’t always the elaborate, sophisticated operation many people believe it to be. In reality, it can be exploitation as simple as exchanging money, a safe place to sleep at night or a meal for sexual acts. And in Northwest Florida, that’s the situation in which authorities are finding young victims.
Many of those young women — specifically between the ages of 12 and 17 — previously experienced trauma that distorts their views of normalcy, and recovery presents an expensive and taxing challenge on the state.
Two entities — Liberty Church and the FamiliesFirst Network of Lakeview — are working together to construct a safe house for those victims to receive individualized counseling, targeted services and hopefully a family to go home to on the other side.
The Secret Place is scheduled to open in the spring on 10 acres in an undisclosed location in the First Judicial Circuit. At first, there will be room to house five girls, but organizers hope to later expand the site.
“They need normalcy, they need a place where they can truly have a safe environment where trust can be built again,” said Kristin Lipscomb, Liberty Church pastor. “With everything they’ve gone through, their dignity’s been robbed, their self-esteem’s been robbed, their trust for people has been robbed so then to come in and provide those services is awesome, but not if they don’t have a safe environment for them to be kids, and they deserve to be kids.”
Lipscomb said the two partnering agencies have been working together for more than a year to bring the project to life, and the house itself is already built.
But after further examining the needs of the children The Secret Place will serve, they took a step back to remodel and realign the facility’s design.
For example, they plan to add a private bathroom to each bedroom so the girls know they have a place to call their own.
“The girls that are going to be served at this home have been exploited in every way possible, and having private space knowing that they could undress, use the restroom, take a shower without someone violating them is huge,” said Jenn Petion, administration director for FamiliesFirst Network of Lakeview. “Each youth in the home will have their own bedroom, their own bathroom and very strict parameters on who can enter their room because for them, they need to reclaim that sense of privacy and that sense of boundaries and have some control.”
Petion said statewide, there are few safe houses that allow for the kind of intense recovery services The Secret Place will provide, and the ones that do are often in South Florida, which requires sending victims from the Panhandle away from the area they know.
In addition to that, those services are expensive, costing roughly $400 per victim per day in the most extreme cases.
Liberty created a not-for-profit separate from the church to field donations and ensure board oversight for the project. Once the house is up and running, FamiliesFirst will reimburse the organization for services it provides for victims who are receiving care there, according to Petion.
The house will be licensed to take five people, so if The Secret Place expands like it plans, there will be more houses built on the 10-acre land that will make almost a small community.
Lipscomb said she hopes that having one of the few safe houses in the Panhandle will allow for a more frank community discussion on how to address the issues.
“We have to be OK with talking about it, and also be OK with readjusting our language and perception on what (human trafficking) looks like,” Lipscomb said. “Everything from talking about what happens with pornography, what happens with the sex industry, how this is affecting our kids, what’s happening with our social media? All of this has to be part of the conversation.”
