El Gato Fur Ever!
FOLEY, Ala. — Los trabajadores del restaurante Vallarta en Foley llaman a Steve Boyleston “El Gato.” Eso es porque Boyleston ha estado alimentando gatos fuera del restaurante y otros lugares de la ciudad todos los días durante ocho años, independientemente del clima.
“Simplemente no puedo sentarme en casa pensando que no han comido hoy,” dijo.
Boylston y su esposa Peggy están comprometidos a asegurarse de que los gatos estén alimentados, pero ahora él tiene que hacerlo solo desde que Peggy tuvo un severo derrame cerebral.
“Lo primero que dijo cuando recuperó la conciencia fue: ‘Steve, tienes que ir a dar de comer a los gatos’.”
Boylston dice que ha padecido de tres ataques cardíacos que, según él, solo han solidificado su propósito.
“No puedes llevarlo contigo,” dijo, refiriéndose a las cosas materiales que poseen los humanos.
Aunque Boyleston, que también es un traficante de armas antiguas, dice que no es un hombre religioso, dice que cree que los animales tienen protección divina y que es responsabilidad de los humanos cuidarlos incluso por encima de la recolección de cosas materiales.
“Estoy vendiendo mis armas antiguas para recaudar dinero para construir un refugio para gatos,” dijo. “Se verá como una iglesia con un letrero que dice: ‘FUR EVER’.”
Hasta entonces, Boyleston dice que pone todo lo que puede en comprar $1,500 en comida húmeda y seca para gatos cada mes. Dice que no recibe fondos ni asistencia de voluntarios u organizaciones de cuidado de animales.
Irónicamente, Boylston dice que se enfrenta a la violencia de personas a las que no les gustan los gatos. Agrega que algunas personas les han hecho cosas horribles a los animales. Comparte abiertamente historias sobre tener que enfrentar a personas agresivas que han causado graves daños a los gatos locales que cuida y otros que amenazan con lastimarlo por alimentarlos.
Sin embargo, nada lo ha desviado de su misión y dice que ha encontrado el mayor apoyo de la comunidad latina.
“La gente latina tiene un pensamiento diferente,” dijo Boylston. “Los latinos que conozco y con los que siempre me encuentro parecen estar felices. Me hace preguntarme, ‘¿Qué saben ellos que nosotros no?'”

FOLEY, Ala. — The workers at the Vallarta’s restaurant in Foley call Steve Boyleston “El Gato.” That’s because Boyleston has been feeding cats outside of the restaurant and other locations around town every day for eight years regardless of the weather.
“I just can’t sit at home thinking they haven’t eaten today,” he said.
Boylston and his wife Peggy are committed to making sure that the cats are fed, but he now has to do much of it on his own ever since Peggy suffered a major stroke.
“The first thing she said when she regained consciousness was, ‘Steve, you have to go feed the cats.’”
Boylston says he has suffered three heart attacks which he says has only solidified his purpose.
“You can’t take it with you,” he said, referring to material things humans possess.
Though Boyleston, who is also an antique gun dealer, says he is not a religious man, says he believes animals have divine protection and it is the responsibility of humans to care for them even above collecting material things.
“I’m selling my antique guns to raise money to build a cat haven,” he said. “It will look like a church with a sign that says, ‘FUR EVER.’”
Until then, Boyleston says puts all he can into buying $1,500 worth of wet and dry cat food each month. He says he doesn’t receive any funds or assistance from volunteers or animal care organizations.
Ironically, Boylston says he is confronted with violence from people who don’t like cats. He adds that some people have done some horrific things to the animals. He openly shares stories about having to get aggressive with people who have caused severe harm to the local cats he cares for and others that threaten to hurt him for feeding them.
Nothing has diverted him from his mission, however, and he says he has found most support from the Latino community.
“The Latino ppl are on a different kind of thinking,” Boylston said. “The Latino people I know and run into always seem to be happy. It makes me wonder, ‘What do they know that we don’t?’”
Boyleston accepts donations of specific brands of cat food to keep the cats on a regular diet as changing food can make them ill.
