Cuatro hombres acusados de intento de asesinato
DeFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla— La oficina del alguacil del condado de Walton dice que cuatro hombres están siendo acusados de intento de asesinato por el tiroteo en enero del 2021 que dejó a una mujer de DeFuniak Springs paralizada del pecho hacia abajo.
Los cargos llegaron exactamente un año después del día del tiroteo que cambió la vida de la víctima para siempre.
En la noche del 10 de enero del 2021, los sospechosos dispararon más de 16 balas al vehículo de Juana Arano mientras conducía por la autopista 90 en DeFuniak Springs. Una de esas balas la golpeó en la espalda, le cortó la médula espinal dejándola sin poder sentir nada debajo del esternón. Luego, los sospechosos hicieron un segundo pase al vehículo, disparando a Arano quien estaba asustada y confundida.
Pero los sospechosos no dieron en el blanco previsto. Arano fue víctima en un caso de confusión de identidad.
El incidente dejó a Arano, esposa y madre de dos hijos, viviendo una verdadera pesadilla. No puede moverse sin la ayuda de una silla de ruedas.
“El infierno por el que ha pasado la familia Arano desde esa noche ha puesto a prueba el núcleo mismo de sus creencias,” dijo el alguacil Michael Adkinson. “Pero nuestra comunidad se ha unido a ellos y la justicia está aquí.”
Durante los últimos 12 meses, la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Walton pasó incontables horas recopilando videos de vigilancia, registros telefónicos y declaraciones. Se ofrecieron recompensas por información y los investigadores trabajaron diligentemente a pesar de las incertidumbres sobre el motivo y la razón.
Durante el curso de la investigación, se obtuvo información que identificó a cuatro sospechosos que participaron en el tiroteo al estilo “desde un vehículo.”
El informe del alguacil del condado de Walton dice que Elijah Neal, de 20 años, junto con Glenda Hamilton, de 23, Khalil Staley, de 22, y Nicholas Campbell, de 21, están siendo acusados de conspiración para cometer asesinato, intento de asesinato y disparar un arma contra un vehículo ocupado.
“Mientras estaban caminando y viviendo una vida normal, la familia Arano estaba tratando de navegar esta trágica situación que ha afectado sus vidas,” dijo el alguacil Michael Adkinson. “Estoy orgulloso de que nuestros investigadores puedan poner fin a este caso y traer paz a la víctima y su familia. Se hará justicia.”
Neal fue arrestado el 6 de enero y fichado en la cárcel del condado de Walton.
Hamilton fue encarcelado por cargos no relacionados y ha sido sentenciado a 30 años en el Departamento Correccional.
Campbell se entregó a la cárcel del condado de Walton el 9 de enero.

Four men charged in attempted murder
DeFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla— The Walton County Sheriff’s office says four men are being charged with attempted murder for the January 2021 shooting that left a DeFuniak Springs woman paralyzed from the chest down.
Charges came exactly a year to the day of the shooting that changed the the victim’s life forever.
On the evening of January 10, 2021, the suspects fired more than 16 bullets at Juana Arano’s vehicle as she drove on Highway 90 in DeFuniak Springs. One of those bullets struck her in the back, severing her spinal cord, leaving her unable to feel anything below her sternum. The suspects then made a second pass at the vehicle, firing at a scared and confused Arano.
But the suspects did not hit their intended target. Arano was the victim in a case of mistaken identity.
The incident left Arano, a wife and mother of two, living a real-life nightmare. She is unable to move without the aid of a wheelchair.
“The hell the Arano family has gone through since that night has tested the very core of their beliefs,” said Sheriff Michael Adkinson. “But our community has rallied around them and justice is here.”
Over the last 12 months, Walton County Sheriff’s Office spent countless hours gathering video surveillance, phone records, and statements. Rewards were offered for information and investigators worked diligently despite uncertainties about motive and reason.
During the course of the investigation, information was gained identifying four suspects as having involvement in the “drive-by” style shooting.
The Walton County sheriff’s report says Elijah Neal, 20, along with Glenda Hamilton, 23, Khalil Staley, 22, and Nicholas Campbell, 21, are being charged with conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, and firing a gun into an occupied vehicle.
“While they were out walking around living normal lives, the Arano family was trying to navigate this tragic situation that has affected all of their lives,” said Sheriff Michael Adkinson. “I am proud that our investigators can put this case to rest and bring peace to the victim and her family. Justice will be served.”
Neal was arrested on January 6 and booked into the Walton County Jail.
Hamilton was incarcerated on unrelated charges and has been sentenced to 30 years in the Department of Corrections.
Campbell turned himself in to the Walton County Jail on January 9.
Warrants for Staley’s arrest are still active and he is currently being sought by the U.S. Marshals Service.
