Cinco tortugas marinas rehabilitadas liberadas con éxito
DESTIN-FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. – El programa C.A.R.E. de Gulfarium. El Centro liberó con éxito cinco tortugas marinas rehabilitadas el 9 de junio en el Parque Estatal Topsail Hill Preserve, cerca de la autopista 30A del oeste del condado.
Era una mañana cálida y soleada cuando las multitudes se reunieron para ver a las tortugas en peligro de extinción regresar al Golfo de México. Todas las tortugas marinas rehabilitadas habían sido víctimas de lesiones relacionadas con anzuelos de pesca.
Una tortuga interesante y muy grande que se aventuró de regreso al Golfo de México fue Mambo, una tortuga boba adulta que pesaba 213 libras. Mambo fue enganchado en la boca por un gran anzuelo circular de pesca de tiburones el 4 de junio de este año. Con una ligera sedación, se retiró el anzuelo y se consideró que esta gran tortuga estaba lista para ser regresada a la naturaleza. Después de examinar a Mambo a su llegada al Centro C.A.R.E, el equipo cree que recientemente había anidado y puesto huevos.
Otra tortuga liberada fue Orión. Esta tortuga verde juvenil pesó 15 libras y llegó al Centro C.A.R.E. por segunda vez el 30 de mayo después de que un pescador lo enganchara accidentalmente en el muelle de pesca de Navarre Beach. Orion recibió rehabilitación por primera vez en el centro en 2021. Debido a su tamaño más pequeño, la llevaron a las olas para liberarla.
Rosalind, una tortuga lora subadulta que pesaba 45 libras, fue enganchada en la boca con un gran anzuelo de pesca de tiburón y un anzuelo tipo J el 27 de mayo. Ambos anzuelos fueron retirados con sedación ligera y luego de un breve período de recuperación para asegurar que estaba bien, Rosalind fue autorizada para su liberación.
También se liberó a Dot, una tortuga verde juvenil que pesaba 17 libras y que fue enganchado con un anzuelo Sabiki en la aleta derecha delantera en el muelle de pesca de Navarre Beach el 29 de mayo. Esta fue la tercera visita de Dot al Centro C.A.R.E., después de recibir tratamiento por última vez en el 2020.
La tortuga verde juvenil, Lil Bit, llegó al Centro C.A.R.E. el 5 de junio después de que un pescador lo enganchara en el muelle de pesca de Navarre Beach. Esta tortuga pesaba solo 7 libras y tenía radiografías claras al llegar al centro, por lo que el equipo veterinario médicamente autorizó su liberación.
Los representantes de Gulfarium aconsejan a cualquier persona que vea una tortuga marina en peligro, herida o muerta que informe inmediatamente a la Comisión de Conservación de Vida Silvestre y Pesca de Florida al 1-888-404-FWCC (1-888-404-3922).
Five rehabilitated sea turtles successfully released
DESTIN-FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. – The Gulfarium’s C.A.R.E. Center successfully released five rehabilitated sea turtles on June 9 at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park off of West County Highway 30A.
It was a warm, sunny morning as crowds gathered to watch the endangered turtles head back into the Gulf of Mexico. All of the rehabilitated sea turtles had fallen victim to fishing hook related injuries.
One interesting and very large turtle venturing back into the Gulf of Mexico was Mambo, an adult female loggerhead weighing a whopping 213lbs. Mambo was hooked in the mouth by a large shark fishing circle hook on June 4 of this year. With light sedation the hook was removed, and this large turtle was deemed ready for release. After examining Mambo upon arrival at the C.A.R.E Center, the team believes that she had recently nested and laid eggs.
Another turtle released was Orion. This juvenile green weighed 15lbs and arrived at the C.A.R.E. Center for the second time on May 30 after being accidently foul hooked by a fisherman at Navarre Beach Fishing Pier. Orion first received rehabilitation at the center in 2021. Due to her smaller size, she was walked into the surf for release.
Rosalind, a sub-adult Kemp’s ridley weighing in at 45lbs, was hooked in the mouth with a large shark fishing hook and a J-hook, on May 27. Both hooks were removed with light sedation and following a short recovery period to ensure all was well, Rosalind was cleared for release.
Dot, a juvenile green weighing in at 17lbs, who was foul hooked with a Sabiki hook in the right front flipper, at Navarre Beach Fishing Pier on May 29 was also released. This was Dot’s third visit to the C.A.R.E. Center, after last receiving treatment in 2020.
Juvenile green sea turtle, Lil Bit, arrived at the C.A.R.E. Center on June 5 after being foul hooked by a fisherman at Navarre Beach Fishing Pier. This turtle weighed just 7lbs and had clear radiographs upon arrival at the center, so was medically cleared for release by the veterinary team.
Gulfarium representatives advise anyone who sees a sea turtle in distress, injured, or deceased to report it to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission immediately at 1-888-404-FWCC (1-888-404-3922).
