Un hombre de Texas se ahogó tratando de rescatar a sus hijos
DESTIN, Fla. – Un hombre de Texas de 50 años se ahogó en el Golfo de México el domíngo, el 5 de agosto, mientras intentaba rescatar a su hijos, que luchaban en el agua frente a Scenic Highway 98 en Destin alrededor de las 3 p.m. Alejandro Velazquez de Little Elm fue llevado a la costa por los salvavidas de la playa de Destin Beach, pero más tarde murió en el Hospital del Sacred Heart of the Emerald Coast.
Los salvavidas pudieron rescatar a la hija de 13 años de Velázquez y su hijo de 11 años, junto con un joven de 19 años.
La hija dice que el grupo estaban nadando juntos, pero comenzó a luchar. Su padre vino en su ayuda pero se separaron en las olas. Un socorrista pudo usar una boya de rescate para llevar a los jóvenes a tierra con seguridad, sin embargo, otro socorrista encontró a Velázquez boca abajo e inconsciente. Fue llevado a la orilla donde le intentaron salvar la vida.
Este es el segundo ahogamiento en las playas del Condado de Okaloosa en los últimos cinco días. Un adolescente de 19 años de Mississippi se ahogó el 1 de agosto mientras nadaba en el Golfo de Okaloosa Island.
Se recomienda a los visitantes de la playa que sigan siempre las directivas del sistema de bandera de playa y sepan qué hacer si les atrapa una marea.
Texas man drowns trying to rescue his children
DESTIN, Fla.—A 50 year old Texas man drowned in the Gulf of Mexico Sunday, August 5, while attempting to rescue his children, who were struggling in the water off Scenic Highway 98 in Destin around 3 p.m. Alejandro Velazquez of Little Elm was pulled to shore by Destin Beach Safety lifeguards, but later died at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast.
Lifeguards were able to rescue Velazquez’s 13-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son, along with a 19-year-old.
The daughter says the group was swimming together but began to struggle. Her father came to their aid but they became separated in the waves. A lifeguard was able to use a rescue buoy to get the youngsters ashore safely, however another lifeguard found Velazquez face down and unconscious. He was pulled to shore where lifesaving measures were attempted.
This is the second drowning on Okaloosa County beaches in the past five days. A 19 –year old Mississippi teen drowned August 1st while swimming in the Gulf off Okaloosa Island.
Beach visitors are urged to always adhere to the beach flag system directives and know what to do if caught in a riptide.
