Representative removed from prestigious House committee

Republican Rep. Mike Hill was removed from the House Public Integrity and Ethics (PIE) Committee in August. The removal follows a controversial discussion regarding gays.

In May, Hill attended a recorded public meeting in Pensacola where an audience member asked Hill if he would sponsor legislation allowing gays to be executed. Reports say Hill laughed then responded, “I wonder how that would go over.”

It is unclear whether Hill’s response directly cost him the seat on the PIE Committee, however lawmakers from the opposing party, Gov. Ron DeSantis and Speaker José Oliva have reacted with condemnation to the exchange.

In a joint statement with Rules Chair Chris Sprowls, Oliva said, “We unequivocally condemn both the question asked of Rep. Hill, and Rep. Hill’s laughter and refusal to push back and remind his audience that this is America and we don’t stone people to death we disagree with.”

Gov. DeSantis later commented to reporters, “I support Speaker Oliva’s comments and I trust the Speaker to take whatever action is necessary.”

Though Hill was removed from the “PIE” Committee, he remains on the Civil Justice Subcommittee, the Judiciary Committee and the PreK-12 Innovation Subcommittee.

Hill has also promised to introduce an anti-abortion bill in 2020 similar to the Alabama law. A less restrictive law he promoted in 2019 did not pass.
