MFRD rescata a una mujer de un automóvil incendiado por cables eléctricos
MOBILE, Ala. — Las unidades del Departamento de Bomberos y Rescate de Móvile fueron enviadas aproximadamente a las 4:26 p. m. para atender un informe de un incendio en un vehículo en la cuadra 7700 de Hitt Road, el viernes 24 de mayo del 2024.
La unidad 26 llegó al lugar y encontró un poste de electricidad caído. Cerca de allí, sus cables de alta tensión habían caído sobre el techo de un Toyota Camry que circulaba por Hitt Road. Una mujer estaba en el asiento del conductor del automóvil.
De los tres cables caídos, uno descansaba contra el automóvil, mientras que el viento hizo que otro entrara en contacto con el automóvil de manera intermitente, provocando un arco eléctrico y encendiendo el revestimiento del techo del vehículo.
El personal estableció una zona segura y le dijo a la ocupante que no se moviera para evitar el contacto con metales conductores, aunque el humo llenó el automóvil y el plástico del techo en llamas goteaba cerca de la conductora.
Los bomberos deslizaron una pica de 10 pies de largo sobre el techo del automóvil para evitar que el cable entrara en contacto con el. La pica, una herramienta que se utiliza para derribar techos durante la extinción de incendios, tiene un mango largo hecho de fibra de vidrio no conductora.
Luego usaron una pica de 6 pies para abrir la puerta del automóvil. Los equipos le indicaron a la conductora que no tocara nada y le indicaron cómo salir del vehículo con cuidado. Luego la ayudaron a llegar a la zona segura.
Los materiales derretidos en el automóvil finalmente incendiaron el vehículo, que se dejó arder hasta que Alabama Power desactivó los cables de electricidad que formaban un arco en su techo. Luego, los equipos usaron agua y espuma para extinguir el fuego.
“Fue una mala situación, que empeoró con el paso del tiempo. Tuvimos mucha suerte de sacarla de allí,” dijo el capitán Charles Andrews.
MFRD Rescues Woman from Car Ignited by Power Lines
MOBILE, Ala. — Mobile Fire-Rescue Department units were dispatched at about 4:26 p.m. for a report of a vehicle fire in the 7700 block of Hitt Road, Friday, May 24, 2024.
Engine 26 arrived on scene to find a power pole down. Nearby, its high voltage power lines had fallen onto the roof of a Toyota Camry that had been driving down Hitt Road. A woman was in the driver’s seat of the car.
Of the three downed wires, one rested against the car, while wind caused another to intermittently contact the car, arcing and igniting the ceiling liner of the vehicle.
Personnel established a safe zone and told the occupant not to move to prevent contact with conductive metals though smoke filled the car and burning ceiling plastic dripped near the driver.
Firefighters slid a 10-foot-long pike pole onto the roof of the car to keep the wire from contacting it. The pike pole, a tool used to tear down ceilings during firefighting, has a long shaft made of nonconductive fiberglass.
Then they used a 6-foot pike pole to open the car door. Crews instructed the driver not to touch anything and instructed her how to carefully exit the vehicle. They then assisted her into the safe zone.
The melting materials in the car eventually ignited the vehicle, which was left to burn until arcing power lines at its roof were de-energized by Alabama Power. Crews then used water and foam to extinguish the fire.
“It was a bad situation, getting worse as time went on. We were very fortunate to get her out of there,” Capt. Charles Andrews said.
