San Se en Fort Walton Beach
FT. WALTON BEACH, Fla. — Se celebrará una versión de las Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, en la Costa del Golfo. Boricuas Ausentes está organizando un evento en el Harvey F. Eckhoff VFW Post 7674, en Fort Walton Beach, para el sábado 19 de enero desde las 6 p.m. hasta las 11 p.m. Las entradas anticipadas cuestan $20 y las entradas en la puerta cuestan $25.
La Fiesta de la Calle San Sebastián, conocida como “Sanse,” es una popular celebración anual de cuatro días en San Juan. A partir del tercer jueves de enero, las festividades son en honor a San Sebastián, un mártir que también se recuerda con una calle que lleva su nombre, en el Viejo San Juan.
La celebración en Puerto Rico, se originó como un evento para recaudar fondos, para reconstruir la Iglesia de San José, en la década de 1950 y revivió en la década de 1970 para ayudar a recaudar fondos para una escuela primaria. La iglesia y la escuela están ubicadas en la calle San Sebastián, en el Viejo San Juan.
Hoy en día, la celebración llena el colorido telón de fondo de la calle San Sebastián con miles de personas en trajes y música. La celebración ahora se considera un asunto internacional, ya que los eventos en otras ciudades de los Estados Unidos y en otros países, crean sus propias versiones del festival.
En Fort Walton Beach, los ingresos del evento beneficiarán a AMI Kids, una organización sin fines de lucro, dedicada a ayudar a los jóvenes a convertirse en adultos responsables y productivos. Boricuas Ausentes are organizing an event at the Harvey F Eckhoff VFW Post 7674 in Fort Walton Beach for Saturday, January 19 from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. Presale tickets are $20 and tickets at the door are $25.
The San Sebastian Street Festival, better known as “San Se,” is a popular annual four-day celebration in San Juan. Beginning on the third Thursday of January, the festivities are in honor of Saint Sebastian, a martyr who is also memorialized with a street named after him in Old San Juan.
The celebration in Puerto Rico originated as a fundraiser to rebuild San Jose Church in the 1950s and revived in the 1970s to help raise funds for an elementary school. Both the church and the school are located on San Sebastián Street in Old San Juan.
Today the celebration fills Calle San Sebastian colorful backdrop with thousands of people in costumes and music. The celebration is now considered an international affair as events in other U.S. cities and in other countries create their own versions of the festival.
