Estudiantes acusados de incendio premeditado
NICEVILLE, Fla. – Dos estudiantes de Niceville High School están acusados de prender fuego dentro de un baño de niñas el martes, lo que provocó la evacuación de la escuela y causó aproximadamente $2500 en daños.
Cadence Yates y Emily Kempton, ambas de 15 años, fueron arrestadas por la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Okaloosa por cargos de incendio premeditado (un delito grave de primer grado) e interrupción de una función escolar.
El Oficial de Recursos Escolares ubicó el incendio en el Edificio 600 e inmediatamente comenzó a apagarlo. Una vez que el Departamento de Bomberos lo consideró seguro, se permitió que los estudiantes regresaran a sus aulas.
Las dos posibles sospechosas fueron identificadas rápidamente a través de numerosas pistas, incluido Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers, y finalmente admitieron haber usado un encendedor para encender un rollo grande de papel higiénico dentro de una caseta de baño como una “broma.” El fuego se salió de control rápidamente.
La videovigilancia muestra a la pareja saliendo juntas del baño alrededor de las 9 a.m. y regresando unos siete minutos después para abrir la puerta. Entonces se puede ver humo saliendo del baño. Yates y Kempton abandonaron inmediatamente el área.
Además de incendio provocado e interrupción de una función escolar, Yates también está acusada de violación de la libertad condicional por un cargo original de hurto mayor de auto.
Students charged with arson
NICEVILLE, Fla. – Two students at Niceville High School are charged with setting a fire inside a girls’ restroom Tuesday, prompting a school evacuation and causing approximately $2500 in damages.
Cadence Yates and Emily Kempton, both 15 years old, have been arrested by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office on charges of arson, (a first-degree felony), and disruption of a school function.
The School Resource Officer located the fire in Building 600 and immediately began putting it out. Once the Fire Department deemed it safe, students were allowed back into their classrooms.
The two potential suspects were identified quickly through numerous tips, including Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers, and ultimately admitted using a lighter to ignite a large roll of toilet paper inside a stall as a “joke”. The fire quickly grew out of control.
Video surveillance shows the pair leaving the bathroom together around 9 a.m. and returning about seven minutes later to open the door. Smoke can then be seen coming out of the restroom. Yates and Kempton immediately left the area.
In addition to arson and disruption of a school function, Yates is also charged with violation of probation for an original charge of grand theft auto.
