$1M EN DROGAS INCAUTADO EN MOBILE (WKRG)

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala.

One million dollars worth of Meth seized in Mobile County

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG – Dec. 7, 2018) – Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Border Patrol arrested two men for trafficking Methamphetamine.

MCSO deputies say, 36 kilograms (80 pounds) of Mexican Ice, a more powerful form of methamphetamine, was seized last week.

“All of this is manufactured in Mexico and trafficked up through the United States and all of the drug operations in Mexico are controlled by drug cartels there,” said Sheriff Sam Cochran.

In all, it’s worth about a million dollars, but instead of being sold on the street, the 80 pounds of Mexican Ice is sitting in the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. “Is a highly pure form of methamphetamine, it’s what we see nowadays being trafficked into our country from generally Mexico. It’s the preferred methamphetamine now,” said the sheriff.

The sheriff says this was not the final destination, but it could have eventually ended up back in Mobile.

“It’s gotta be coming in from somewhere, whether it’s part of this batch, or part of several batches like this that are smuggled into the United States, and then it circles back and comes in to our community, or other communities,” said Sheriff Cochran.

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Border Patrol seized the drugs from two men traveling on eastbound on I-10 on November 27. It started as a traffic stop. The sheriff’s office says the drugs were disguised in the back of a pick-up.

“In the back of a pick-up truck bed that was carrying some industrial equipment and it was very disguised within this industrial equipment, and actually had to be cut out of the industrial equipment.”

“They’ve gone through great lengths to disguise it, it appears like a grease like stuff, you can even smell a little of a smell that’s not the drug smell,” said Cochran.

This bust is part of Operation Stonegarden, a federally funded “boots on the ground” initiative to stop drug trafficking.

“We’re seeing more and more of it, and so we’re targeting more of it. As we’ve made inroads in abolishing so much of the homemade, manufactured meth, we’ve seen a switch over to the market that’s being supplied by Mexican meth,” said Sheriff Cochran.

German Eduardo Barahona and Jaime Enrique Cortez were arrested on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 for trafficking methamphetamine. They are being held in Mobile Metro Jail.

The case has been turned over to ICE Homeland Security Investigations Mobile.
