CRESTVIEW,FL — Crestview High School student Sharon Garcia was selected as a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Lowell, MA in June. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields.

The purpose of this event is to encourage and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists and help them reach their goal. Delegates are also offered programs and services which provide resources and access to networks to help them advance in their career goals.

Sharon Garcia was nominated to attend the congress by Dr. Mario Capecchi, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine and the Science Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. He chose Garcia to represent Florida because of her academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.

Garcia says that she has known that she wants to become a doctor since she was nine years old.

“My mother Emma Saldana and my father Moises Garcia are the ones who deserves all the credit for my hard work, Garcia said.

Garcia credits her mother with instilling in her the belief that dreams can come true if you really want them to. She says her father taught her to overcome obstacles that may interfere with obtaining success.

“My parents have always been the people to inspire me to go above and beyond,” she said. “Everything I do is to make my family proud.”

Garcia also has family in South Florida and Texas and in Mexico.

“My parents are the ones who I owe everything to. I would give them the world because they gave up theirs to make my dreams a reality,” Garcia said.

Last year, Garcia attended a scholars program at Eglin Air Force Base where she shadowed plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Lieutenant Colonel Miller. The week-long experience included time in a surgery room.

She has yet to even begin college, but it appears that the opportunities and encouragement are there to help Garcia turn her dreams of becoming a doctor into a reality.
