The Gift of Opportunity

Yazmin Ramirez, Anahí Reyes and Ira McQueen met in Pensacola on New Year’s Day, 2018.

Each year, many of us make New Year resolutions. But few people are likely to have as much determination as Anahí Reyes.

Longtime readers of La Costa Latina Newspaper first learned of Anahí in the Fall of 2015 when we told the story of the challenges she faced to stay in school. Her then teacher, Yazmin Ramirez, left her home in Fort Walton Beach to be with her husband in Honduras. There, she accepted employment at Alison Stone Bixby School in Zamorano, and became Anahí ’s teacher.

It didn’t take long for Ramirez to see that Anahí had a gift, but was in jeopardy of not being able to proceed with her education because she lost her financial sponsor. Ramirez reached out to La Costa Latina to help find a new donor.

Ira McQueen, of Pensacola, was moved by Anahí’s story and responded.

“I grew up on a farm in the country. People always helped with food or money to help me through school,” McQueen said. “I am glad that I could help someone else.”

Anahí was able to finish her school year, but Ms. Ramirez had to return home. Anahí’s new teacher saw the same qualities in her and agreed that more had to be done to help her succeed.

In 2017, ’s teacher sponsored her visit to the United States. Coincidentally, she is living in Louisiana, just three and a half hours from Ms. Ramirez. Ramirez now works for Compass Immigration Law Office who is helping Anahí and her family to look into the possibility of her staying in the U.S. If so, her teacher has gone as far as offering to adopt Anahí legally.

“It’s not just that she is a smart kid,” Ramirez said. “It’s that she doesn’t take it for granted.

Not only does Anahí appreciate her God-given gifts, but she has a great appreciate for the people around her that are helping her to succeed in life.

“It’s a pretty amazing feeling that someone from a different country would want to help me,” Anahí said.

Which is why she made sure to stop in Pensacola during the Christmas break to finally thank her benefactor in person.
